Symmetry is beauty, and if you are self-conscious of the asymmetry in your breasts, you may work hard to try to conceal it in order to look your best and feel fully self-confident. No woman has perfectly matched breasts, but if your breasts are significantly different, you may not be able to feel comfortable and confident in your appearance. You may have difficulty locating clothes that fit properly, and your relationships may suffer because you feel uncomfortable with intimate situations or even relatively public activities such as hanging out at the pool.
This page has some basic information about the correction of breast asymmetry, but it cannot give you personalized recommendations. If you are tired of your breast asymmetry and want to learn how breast surgery can be used to improve the appearance of your breasts, please contact the Cosmetic Surgical Center in Dallas today to talk to board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Vasdev Rai.
Understanding Breast Asymmetry
Some degree of breast asymmetry is normal, but most women who seek treatment experience a large degree of asymmetry due to one or more medical conditions. Some causes of breast asymmetry include:
- Congenital or developmental breast asymmetry (such as unilateral virginal breast hypertrophy)
- Degenerative breast asymmetry in which the breasts begin the same size but one shrinks as a result of mastitis (breast infection) or another condition
- Acquired breast asymmetry due to:
- Uneven development during pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Weight fluctuations expressed unevenly, including exercise-related changes in breast size or shape
- Lumpectomy, mastectomy, or other surgery for breast cancer or breast infection
- Breast changes due to aging
Because breast conditions that create asymmetry can be very dynamic, it is important to determine that your current condition is relatively permanent. Especially in the case of developmental breast asymmetry, women often experience growth of one breast prior to the other, but unless either breast is deformed as a result of growth, treatment is often delayed to determine the best point of intervention.
Treating Breast Asymmetry
Breast asymmetry can exist in different degrees. Depending on your ideal breast size, breast asymmetry may be treated with breast reduction, breast enlargement, or a combination of both procedures. A breast lift may also be necessary to ensure both breasts have an attractive shape. In some cases, nipple reduction or reshaping may also be recommended to ensure both breasts are equally attractive.
Why Choose Dr. Vasdev Rai for Your Breast Asymmetry
Breast asymmetry can often be difficult to treat successfully. The key is successfully design an appropriate treatment plan that fully addresses the key elements of your breast surgery. A poor treatment plan, such as simply placing breast implants in asymmetric breasts without designing appropriate breast implant pockets, will only worsen your asymmetry.
In his 30 years of serving the Dallas-Forth Worth community as a board-certified plastic surgeon and Breast surgeon in Dallas, Dr. Vasdev Rai has helped many women who were seeking relief from breast asymmetry.
